Iron deficiency is rarely confined to one person in a family. A teenager with poor concentration, a mother tired for years, a grandmother with breathlessness on stairs: each is a reason a doctor may ask for Iron Studies, and each is easy to book without a fast. The profile answers a specific question that a blood count cannot: if haemoglobin is low, is iron the reason? ## Five Measurements, Explained Iron is the quantity in the bloodstream when the sample is drawn. Transferrin is the carrier protein. Iron Binding Capacity - Total (TIBC) shows how much iron transferrin is able to carry; UIBC (Unsaturated Iron-Binding Capacity) is the portion still unoccupied, and Iron plus UIBC equals TIBC. % Iron Saturation expresses Iron as a share of TIBC. When the body is short of iron, saturation falls while TIBC and transferrin climb. ## How the Combinations Are Read Low iron with high TIBC, high transferrin and low saturation is the pattern of iron deficiency. Low iron with low or normal TIBC suggests the anaemia of chronic disease, where iron is present in the body but locked away. High iron with high saturation and low UIBC points toward iron overload. According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5, 2019–21), over 50% of Indian women aged 15–49 are anaemic, so a pattern is worth confirming before supplements are begun. ## Ferritin and the Inflammation Problem Ferritin, the storage protein, is not one of these five parameters. It is also an acute-phase reactant, meaning infection or inflammation pushes it up, and so a normal ferritin can sit alongside genuine iron deficiency when the person is unwell. Because this profile reports saturation and TIBC, it gives a second view that is less affected, though not immune to inflammation either. Ferritin can be ordered separately. ## Delhi Households: Booking for Parents and Grandparents In older adults, new iron deficiency is a finding doctors take seriously, since it may point to slow blood loss and needs medical follow-up rather than just tablets. Home collection suits relatives who tire easily on journeys; a phlebotomist can visit homes in Karol Bagh, Janakpuri, Vikaspuri, Preet Vihar, Kalkaji or Hauz Khas, and no fasting means there is no early-morning schedule to manage. Serum iron is highest in the morning and rises after an iron tablet, so tell the phlebotomist about supplements; your doctor may suggest a gap before testing. ## Limits to Keep in Mind Iron Studies describe iron status; they do not locate a source of loss. Heavy periods, diet and bleeding in the digestive tract need clinical assessment. Thalassemia trait can mimic iron deficiency on a blood count and is identified by Hb electrophoresis or HPLC. Infection, inflammation and liver disease reduce the reliability of iron markers. Interpret the result with a blood count. ## After the Result A low-iron pattern is normally followed by a conversation about cause as well as treatment. Doctors often repeat the profile after some weeks of therapy to confirm that saturation is recovering. Keep each report so the sequence can be read; one family member's result also does not tell you anything about another's, so each person is tested and reported separately. ## Where Packages Fit For anyone who also needs other panels, a package costs less than booking each separately. Advanced Full Body Checkup with Vitamin D & B12 (89 parameters) is the first package containing Iron Studies; the larger packages above it also include it. Those packages contain a Lipid Profile and Fasting Glucose and require a 10-hour fast, which this profile does not. ## What Is Not Included Ferritin, haemoglobin and the rest of the blood count, Vitamin B12 and folate, Hb electrophoresis or HPLC, reticulocyte count, peripheral smear, and tests for gastrointestinal blood loss are not part of this profile. Each is a separate order. The sample is processed at a NABL-accredited laboratory in our network. NABL accreditation is granted to individual laboratories after evaluation of their equipment, processes and personnel, and HealthVas does not claim to hold it. ## Sources National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), 2019–21.
