Profile: Kidney Function Test (KFT). Tests: 12 parameters. Price: From 390. Fasting: Not required. Sample: Serum. Reports: 24 hours, digital. Home collection: Available across Delhi. Lab: NABL-accredited. Kidney function is one of the first things checked in older relatives, and one of the things most often overlooked. In a multi-generational Delhi home, a grandparent on a diabetes or blood pressure tablet, a parent with joint pain who uses painkillers regularly, and an adult with a raised uric acid may all be told to get a Kidney Function Test (KFT). It needs no fasting, so a home draw can happen at any convenient hour. ## What the 12 Parameters Report Creatinine and GFR by MDRD Formula are the headline pair. Creatinine is a muscle by-product cleared by the kidneys; the GFR is an estimate of filtration calculated from creatinine, age and sex. Creatinine rises only after a good deal of function is lost, so a normal value does not exclude early disease, and the MDRD estimate is least reliable at the extremes of muscle mass. Urea, Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN), BUN / Creatinine ratio and Urea / Creatinine Ratio express the same nitrogen waste in different ways. Urea and BUN are the same compound reported differently, and the ratios help a doctor tell dehydration from kidney disease. Uric Acid reflects purine breakdown and is linked to gout and some stones. Sodium, Potassium and Chloride are the main electrolytes, and Calcium and Phosphorus - Serum are minerals that shift in advanced kidney and parathyroid disease. ## Why Older Households Should Look Twice The kidneys filter a little less with age, and many tablets taken by older adults are cleared through them. Regular anti-inflammatory painkillers are the commonest example. A grandparent who is slightly dehydrated, perhaps because they drink less in winter, can show a temporary rise in urea and creatinine that settles with fluids, which is why a doctor may repeat the test. Diabetes is the other major factor: 101 million Indian adults have it (Anjana RM, Mohan V, et al., ICMR-INDIAB, Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, 2023;11(7):474–489). ## Smog Season and Fluids In the October-to-January months, people tend to stay indoors, and in cold weather they often drink less water without noticing. That is a behavioural pattern, not an effect of air quality on the kidneys, but low fluid intake can raise urea, BUN and uric acid for a day or two. Keep drinking water as you normally would before the test. ## Medicines and the Report Tell the phlebotomist about every regular tablet, especially painkillers, water tablets and blood pressure medicines, and about any gym or protein supplement. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own. A creatinine slightly above range is often repeated after a few days of normal fluid intake. The report flags values outside the reference range, and your doctor interprets them against symptoms and history. ## Home Collection Across Delhi A phlebotomist can visit South Delhi, Saket, Greater Kailash, Lajpat Nagar, Dwarka, Janakpuri, Pitampura, Model Town, Preet Vihar, Mayur Vihar and many other localities. Because there is no fasting, the visit does not need to be early, which suits a household where several people are being tested. Any collection charge is shown in the booking flow before you confirm. ## Combining With Other Panels The Kidney Function Test (KFT) is included in every full body package, starting with the Basic Full Body Checkup (77 parameters), together with the Liver Function Test (LFT), Lipid Profile and Complete Blood Count (CBC) + ESR. For anyone booking more than one panel, a package costs less than separate orders. Packages include tests needing a 10-hour fast; this profile does not. ## What Is Not Included No urine tests. A routine urine dipstick picks up overt protein but not microalbuminuria, and early diabetic kidney damage needs a separate urine microalbumin / ACR test. Not included: cystatin C, Magnesium, Bicarbonate, parathyroid hormone, Vitamin D, kidney ultrasound or a kidney stone workup. A normal KFT does not rule out early damage. ## Sources Anjana RM, Mohan V, et al. ICMR-INDIAB, Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, 2023;11(7):474–489 Content last reviewed: October 2026
