In many Delhi homes the person who needs this test is a parent or grandparent, and the person booking it is an adult child. The Lipid Profile reports nine parameters from one serum sample and needs a 10-hour fast. It is also part of every full body package, starting with the Basic Full Body Checkup (77 parameters); when a family is arranging several panels for the same relative, a package costs less than separate bookings. ## What a Lipid Profile Tells a Doctor Cholesterol Total, Cholesterol - LDL, Cholesterol HDL, Cholesterol VLDL, Non-HDL cholesterol and Triglycerides form the core. LDL is the fraction most associated with deposits in artery walls, HDL is the fraction that carries cholesterol away, and VLDL tracks closely with triglycerides. Non-HDL cholesterol is total cholesterol minus HDL, a figure that captures every deposit-forming particle at once. The AHA/ACC Guideline on the Management of Blood Cholesterol (2018) found non-HDL cholesterol a better predictor of risk than LDL alone. Three further values, Cholesterol LDL/Cholesterol HDL, Cholesterol Total/Cholesterol HDL Ratio and HDL/LDL Ratio, express the same readings as ratios. ## Fasting for an Older Relative The fast is required because triglycerides rise for hours after eating and the size of the rise is unpredictable; a post-meal sample can overstate them and distort values that are calculated from them. Ten hours means plain water only. For someone in their seventies, a long fast is not trivial, so plan it sensibly: an early light dinner, a morning draw at home, and breakfast ready immediately afterwards. Anyone on diabetes medicines or insulin should ask their doctor how to adjust doses around a fast before booking, because skipping food while taking tablets can cause low blood sugar. Home collection suits this well. A phlebotomist visiting Lajpat Nagar, Rohini or Vikaspuri spares a fasting elder the journey to a centre. ## Winter, Smog and Fewer Walks From October to January many Delhi residents cut back on outdoor walks when the air is poor, and the evening round of the colony park is the first thing to go. Less activity is a lifestyle factor your doctor will weigh next to the numbers. No test here measures the effect of air quality; the profile reports what is in the blood, nothing more. Repeating the test after a stretch of reduced activity gives a useful reference point. ## Conditions That Move the Numbers Diabetes, present in around 101 million Indian adults (ICMR-INDIAB, 2023), and an underactive thyroid, which affects roughly one in ten (Unnikrishnan et al., 2013), both alter lipids. High LDL without an obvious cause often leads a doctor to check TSH. The Full Body Checkup with Thyroid (80 parameters) combines the two. ## Repeating It Over Time Once treatment starts, a Lipid Profile is usually repeated every few months. The fasting duration does not need to be identical each time, but the sample must always be fasted, otherwise a falling or rising triglyceride trend is hard to trust. Keep each report and bring the set to your doctor. ## What This Profile Cannot Do It does not diagnose heart disease, and a normal result does not exclude it. Doctors combine lipid values with age, blood pressure, diabetes, smoking and family history. Results also vary from one day to the next, and acute illness, recent weight loss or pregnancy can change them, so a single reading is a snapshot. ## What Is Not Included No Apolipoprotein B, Apolipoprotein A1, Lipoprotein a, Homocysteine or high-sensitivity C-Reactive Protein; the Cardiac Profile package carries these advanced markers and is meant to supplement a Lipid Profile, not replace it. Also excluded: blood glucose, HbA1c, thyroid tests, liver and kidney function, an ECG, a stress test and a troponin. Each is a separate order. ## Sources American College of Cardiology / American Heart Association, Guideline on the Management of Blood Cholesterol, 2018 · Anjana RM, Mohan V, et al.
