In a Delhi home, the person who most needs a liver test is often a parent or grandparent taking several tablets a day, and the booking is made by the adult child. The Liver Function Test (LFT) measures 12 parameters from one serum sample: Bilirubin Total, Bilirubin Direct, Bilirubin Indirect, Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP), Aspartate Aminotransferase (SGOT), Alanine Transaminase (ALT/SGPT), Gamma Glutamyl Transferase (GGT), Protein Total, Albumin, Globulin, Albumin / Globulin Ratio and SGOT/SGPT Ratio. It needs no fasting, so the draw can happen at home at whatever hour suits the household. Processed at a NABL-accredited laboratory, digital report in 24 hours, from 390. Home sample collection is available across Delhi, including Saket, Hauz Khas, Lajpat Nagar, Dwarka, Janakpuri, Rohini, Pitampura, Mayur Vihar and Karol Bagh. Any collection charge is shown in the booking flow before you confirm.

The Liver Function Test: What It Reports and Where It Stops

At a Glance

Profile: Liver Function Test (LFT). Tests: 12 parameters. Price: From 390. Fasting: Not required. Sample: Serum. Reports: 24 hours, digital. Home collection: Available across Delhi. Lab: NABL-accredited. In many Delhi households the person who most needs a liver panel is not the one who books it. A parent on five or six regular tablets, a grandparent with a long-standing diabetes or blood pressure history, or an adult child whose report showed a raised SGPT will all be sent for the Liver Function Test (LFT). It requires no fasting, so the sample can be drawn at home at whatever hour suits the household, with no early-morning scramble. ## Twelve Measurements, Three Questions The panel answers three questions. First, is the liver being injured? Aspartate Aminotransferase (SGOT) and Alanine Transaminase (ALT/SGPT) rise when liver cells are damaged. ALT is more specific to the liver, while SGOT also comes from muscle and heart, so the SGOT/SGPT Ratio helps a doctor judge the likely cause. Second, are the bile channels blocked? Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) and Gamma Glutamyl Transferase (GGT) climb when bile drainage is impaired, and GGT also responds to alcohol and certain medicines. Bilirubin Total, Bilirubin Direct and Bilirubin Indirect add to this: a high direct fraction suggests obstruction or cell injury, a high indirect fraction suggests increased red cell breakdown or Gilbert syndrome. Third, is the liver still making protein? Protein Total, Albumin, Globulin and Albumin / Globulin Ratio reflect that. Albumin drops slowly, so low values suggest a long-running problem rather than a recent one. ## Older Relatives and Multiple Medicines The liver clears most tablets, and the more regular medicines a person takes, the more reason there is to look at enzymes periodically. Anti-tuberculosis drugs, some antibiotics, certain painkillers used in high doses, and cholesterol-lowering tablets are the commonest to raise values. A modest rise is not automatically a reason to stop a medicine, and stopping one on your own can be harmful. Bring the report to the prescribing doctor. For a parent with limited mobility, home collection avoids a trip to a collection centre. ## Fatty Liver Is Not a Young Person's Problem Only An estimated 30–40% of urban Indian adults have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (Duseja A, et al., Indian Journal of Gastroenterology, 2022). During the October-to-January smog months many Delhi residents walk and exercise outdoors less, which is a behavioural change worth noticing, though it does not by itself cause liver disease. Fatty liver often gives normal or mildly raised enzymes, so a normal LFT does not exclude it. Ultrasound is the test that shows fat in the liver. ## Reading the Report Values outside the reference range are flagged. A small rise in ALT or SGOT is often rechecked after a few weeks. Pairs of results tell a doctor more than single ones: high enzymes with normal bilirubin, high bilirubin with normal enzymes, or high ALP and GGT together each suggest a different next step, whether that is a repeat test, an ultrasound, a hepatitis test or a medicine review. ## Home Collection Across Delhi A phlebotomist can visit homes in South Delhi, Saket, Hauz Khas, Dwarka, Janakpuri, Rohini, Pitampura, Mayur Vihar, Laxmi Nagar, Karol Bagh and many other localities. Because no fasting is needed, the visit can be booked for mid-morning, after a school run or after a temple visit, and one booking can cover more than one family member. ## Package Option for the Whole Family Liver Function Test (LFT) is included in every full body package, starting with the Basic Full Body Checkup (77 parameters), together with the Kidney Function Test (KFT), Lipid Profile and Complete Blood Count (CBC) + ESR. For anyone who needs several of those, a package costs less than separate bookings. Packages include fasting tests that need 10 hours without food; this profile does not. ## What Is Not Included No Hepatitis A, B, C or E test, no prothrombin time (PT/INR), no alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), no ultrasound or elastography, no Lipid Profile, no glucose or HbA1c, and no iron studies. A normal LFT does not rule out early cirrhosis or fatty liver, and it cannot show gallstones. ## Sources Duseja A, et al. Indian Journal of Gastroenterology, 2022 Content last reviewed: October 2026

Who Should Book a Liver Function Test in Delhi?

  • Parents and grandparents taking several regular medicines – In a multi-generational household, one elder may take tablets for diabetes, blood pressure, cholesterol and joint pain together. The liver clears most of them, so doctors check Alanine Transaminase (ALT/SGPT), Aspartate Aminotransferase (SGOT) and bilirubin from time to time. Home collection avoids a trip for someone unsteady on their feet, and the digital report can be forwarded straight to the family doctor.
  • Adults whose recent report flagged a raised SGPT – A single raised enzyme on a routine report often sends people looking for this test. A small rise is common and is usually repeated after a few weeks. The SGOT/SGPT Ratio, Gamma Glutamyl Transferase (GGT) and Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) show whether the pattern fits fat in the liver, a medicine effect, alcohol or bile flow. The result gives your doctor something to act on.
  • Residents of older colonies who exercise less in the smog months – Between October and January, many Delhi residents cut back on outdoor walks. That behavioural change, together with heavier winter meals, is a reason to keep an eye on weight and liver health. An estimated 30–40% of urban Indian adults have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (Duseja A, et al., Indian Journal of Gastroenterology, 2022). Enzymes can still be normal, so ultrasound remains the confirming test.
  • Traders, shop owners and public-sector employees with irregular meals – Long sitting hours, snacking through the day and late dinners are common across Delhi's markets and offices. Nothing about these routines proves liver disease, but they are the background in which fatty liver is most often found. A liver baseline costs less than a full package, needs no fast and fits a gap in the working day, with the digital report arriving within 24 hours.
  • Anyone with yellow eyes, dark urine or persistent itching – Jaundice is the symptom that makes this test urgent. Bilirubin Total, Bilirubin Direct and Bilirubin Indirect distinguish between increased red cell breakdown, impaired liver handling and blocked bile flow, and Albumin shows whether protein production is affected. The test supports a doctor's examination; it does not replace one, and persistent jaundice needs prompt medical attention.
  • Families booking for several members at once – One booking can cover a parent, a spouse and an adult child, each receiving a separate report with reference ranges for their age and sex. If more than one panel is wanted for each person, the Basic Full Body Checkup (77 parameters) includes the Liver Function Test (LFT) and costs less than booking the panels separately, although it requires a 10-hour fast.

How to Prepare for a Liver Function Test

Fasting: Not required. Eat and drink normally, at any hour. Sample: One venous blood draw, processed as serum. All 12 parameters run from it. Medicines: Keep taking prescribed medicines unless your doctor says otherwise. For an older relative, note every tablet, including painkillers, herbal remedies and supplements, and tell the phlebotomist. Alcohol: Avoid heavy drinking for a day or two before; it raises GGT and can lift SGOT and ALT. Exercise: Avoid unusually hard exertion the day before, as muscle also contains SGOT. Home collection: Available across Delhi, including South Delhi, Saket, Hauz Khas, Vasant Kunj, Lajpat Nagar, Dwarka, Janakpuri, Rohini, Pitampura, Model Town, Karol Bagh, Mayur Vihar and Laxmi Nagar. Any collection charge is shown in the booking flow before you confirm. Reports: Digital within 24 hours with reference ranges and flagged values.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about Liver Function Test (LFT) in Delhi

What is included in the Liver Function Test (LFT)?

The Liver Function Test (LFT) includes 12 parameters from one serum sample: Bilirubin Total, Bilirubin Direct, Bilirubin Indirect, Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP), Aspartate Aminotransferase (SGOT), Alanine Transaminase (ALT/SGPT), Gamma Glutamyl Transferase (GGT), Protein Total, Albumin, Globulin, Albumin / Globulin Ratio and SGOT/SGPT Ratio. No fasting is needed and reports are digital within 24 hours.

How much does an LFT test cost in Delhi?

It starts from 390. Home sample collection is available across Delhi, and any collection charge is shown in the booking flow before you confirm. The digital report is included. Booking can be done online or on WhatsApp.

Is fasting needed for a liver function test?

No. You can eat and drink normally and give the sample at any hour. Full body packages differ: they contain a Lipid Profile and fasting glucose that need 10 hours without food. If you only need the liver checked, the Liver Function Test (LFT) avoids the fast completely.

Is SGPT the same as ALT?

Yes. SGPT and ALT are two names for Alanine Transaminase, an enzyme found mostly in the liver. It is reported as ALT/SGPT on this profile. Aspartate Aminotransferase (SGOT, also called AST) is a related enzyme that is also found in muscle and heart. Both are shown, along with their ratio.

My father is on many tablets. Should his liver be checked?

Many doctors check liver enzymes periodically in people who take several regular medicines, because the liver clears most of them. A mild rise is not a reason to stop any medicine without advice; the prescribing doctor decides. A normal LFT is reassuring but does not exclude every liver problem. Share the report with his doctor.

What does a low albumin level mean?

Albumin is a protein the liver makes, so a low level can indicate reduced production, as in long-standing liver disease. It can also be low in kidney protein loss, malnutrition or inflammation, so a single low value does not identify the cause. The Albumin / Globulin Ratio and the rest of the profile help a doctor narrow the possibilities.

Can an LFT detect fatty liver?

Not reliably. Fatty liver often leaves enzymes normal or only mildly raised, so a normal Liver Function Test (LFT) does not exclude it. An ultrasound is the usual test that shows fat. An estimated 30–40% of urban Indian adults have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (Duseja A, et al., Indian Journal of Gastroenterology, 2022).

Does the LFT include a hepatitis test?

No. The profile shows whether the liver is injured, but not whether a hepatitis virus is the cause. Hepatitis A, B, C and E need separate serology tests, which a doctor may add if your enzymes are raised. The Liver Function Test (LFT) also does not include prothrombin time (PT/INR) or alpha-fetoprotein (AFP).

Which full body packages contain the Liver Function Test?

All full body packages do, starting with the Basic Full Body Checkup at 77 parameters, which also includes the Kidney Function Test (KFT), Lipid Profile and Complete Blood Count (CBC) + ESR. Booking several panels through a package costs less than booking them one by one, but the package requires a 10-hour fast.

Which Delhi areas does home collection cover?

Home collection is available across Delhi, including South Delhi, Saket, Greater Kailash, Hauz Khas, Vasant Kunj, Lajpat Nagar, Defence Colony, Dwarka, Janakpuri, Rohini, Pitampura, Model Town, Karol Bagh, Mayur Vihar and Laxmi Nagar. Any collection charge is shown in the booking flow before you confirm.

Can the sample be collected for an elderly person who cannot travel?

Yes. A phlebotomist visits the home, draws one serum sample and leaves. Since no fasting is needed, the visit can be scheduled for a time when a family member is present, and the report is digital so it can be shared with a doctor straight away.

Does winter or smog affect my LFT result?

Not directly. Air quality does not change the values of these 12 parameters, and this test does not measure the effect of pollution. What can change is behaviour: less outdoor exercise and heavier food in winter may contribute to weight gain and fatty liver over time. If a result is raised, your doctor looks for medicine, alcohol and metabolic causes.

How long does the report take?

Digital reports arrive within 24 hours of collection, with all 12 parameters, reference ranges and flagged values. Your doctor should interpret them alongside symptoms and medicines.

Is the lab NABL-accredited?

Yes. Your sample is processed at a NABL-accredited laboratory in our network. NABL accreditation is granted to individual laboratories after an evaluation of their equipment, processes and personnel. It is not a company-wide certification, and HealthVas does not claim to hold accreditation itself.

Can I book for a parent living in a different part of Delhi?

Yes. Enter their details and address at booking, and the phlebotomist visits that address. You can pick a slot that suits them, since there is no fasting window. The report is issued in their name and can be shared digitally with you and their doctor.
