In many Delhi households the person who needs a thyroid test is not the one who books it. A mother's persistent tiredness, a grandfather's slow pulse and weight gain, a daughter's irregular cycles: each is easily put down to age, stress or a busy home, and each is a standard reason for a doctor to ask for this profile. It measures three hormones from a single serum sample, with no fasting and no fixed hour, which makes it easy to arrange for several family members. ## The Three Measurements Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) comes from the pituitary gland and acts as the thyroid's throttle. It is the first value doctors read, because it climbs when the thyroid is underperforming, often before the hormones fall below range. Thyroxine - Total (TT4) is the principal hormone produced by the thyroid. Tri-Iodothyronine Total (TT3) is the more potent hormone, formed mostly when tissues convert T4. The word "total" means the result counts hormone bound to carrier proteins plus the small free portion. ## How Doctors Interpret the Combination A raised TSH with a low TT4 indicates hypothyroidism. A raised TSH with a normal TT4 is subclinical hypothyroidism, and the usual next step is a repeat test some weeks later rather than immediate treatment. A suppressed TSH with high TT4 or TT3 suggests hyperthyroidism. In a study of Indian adults, about one in ten had hypothyroidism, and women were affected about three times as often as men (15.86% against 5.02%) (Unnikrishnan et al., 2013). ## Testing Several Generations at Home Older adults often show thyroid disease through quiet signs: sluggishness, constipation, feeling cold, low mood, confusion that families assume is ageing. These are easy to miss, and a thyroid result is among the simpler tests that can bring them to light. For a parent who finds travel tiring, a phlebotomist can collect at home in Rohini, Dwarka, Lajpat Nagar, Pitampura or Mayur Vihar. During the colder, hazier months, when many families go out less, home collection also avoids postponing the test. There is no fasting, so a mid-morning visit is as valid as an early one. Each person gets a separate report with ranges suited to their age and sex. ## Limits of a Thyroid Profile This profile shows how the thyroid is working, not why. Autoimmune thyroiditis, the commonest cause of hypothyroidism, is identified by antibody testing, which is not included. Total hormone levels can move with changes in binding proteins, such as in pregnancy or with oestrogen-containing medicines, while thyroid function itself is unchanged. TSH can be disturbed temporarily by acute illness and by some medicines, and biotin supplements can distort certain immunoassays. A borderline result is usually repeated. Lumps or swelling in the neck need an ultrasound, which a blood test cannot replace. ## Where Packages Fit Anyone who also needs blood count, kidney, liver or lipid testing will pay less through a package than by booking panels one at a time. Full Body Checkup with Thyroid (80 parameters) is the first package to include this profile, followed by Advanced Full Body Checkup with Vitamin D & B12 (89 parameters) and the larger ones. Those packages contain a Lipid Profile and Fasting Glucose, so they require a 10-hour fast; this profile alone does not. ## What Is Not Included Free T3 and Free T4 are not reported, nor are Anti-TPO or anti-thyroglobulin antibodies, thyroglobulin, reverse T3, calcitonin, a thyroid scan or ultrasound, Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, a blood count or iron markers. Each would be ordered separately. Samples go to a NABL-accredited laboratory in our network. NABL accreditation belongs to individual laboratories, assessed on their equipment, processes and personnel; it is not a company-wide certification, and HealthVas does not claim it. ## Sources Unnikrishnan AG, et al.
