If you work a shift that starts before dawn, a follow-up test that needs an overnight fast and a morning lab visit tends to get postponed until it matters more. The Blood Picture - Peripheral Smear Examination needs neither. A qualified pathologist prepares a slide from your blood and reads it cell by cell, reporting five findings: Red Blood Cells, White Blood Cells, Platelets, Hemoparasites and a written Impression. Machines count cells; only a pathologist can describe their shape and structure. The smear is read alongside the Complete Blood Count (CBC) + ESR, which supplies the counts. No fasting is required. Processed at a NABL-accredited laboratory, digital reports within 24 hours, from 390. Home sample collection is available across Faridabad, including NIT 1, NIT 5, Sector 7, Sector 16, Sector 21C, Sector 46, Old Faridabad, Ballabgarh and Greater Faridabad. Any collection charge is shown in the booking flow.

The Peripheral Smear: What It Shows and Who Reads It

At a Glance

Profile: Blood Picture - Peripheral Smear Examination. Tests: 5 reported findings: Red Blood Cells, White Blood Cells, Platelets, Hemoparasites and Impression. Price: From 390. Fasting: Not required. Sample: Blood. Reports: 24 hours, digital. Home collection: Available across Faridabad; any charge is shown in the booking flow. Lab: NABL-accredited. Doctors read a smear together with a blood count, and this profile does not replace one. The counts are in the Complete Blood Count (CBC) + ESR. Both profiles are included in every full body package, starting with the Basic Full Body Checkup (77 parameters), and a package costs less than booking them separately. ## A Slide Read by a Person The sample is spread thinly on a glass slide, stained and examined under a microscope. A qualified pathologist reads it cell by cell. This cannot be automated: analysers count, and a pathologist sees shape, size and internal structure. That is specialist time, which is why the smear is dropped from cheaper bundles. ## The Five Findings Red Blood Cells: size, shape, colour and unusual forms. White Blood Cells: types, maturity, any immature cells. Platelets: adequacy on the slide and clumping. Hemoparasites: parasites seen or not seen. Impression: a written conclusion and suggested next step. ## Red Cells: Moving From "Low" to "Why" The CBC tells you Haemoglobin is low. The slide helps explain it: small pale cells (microcytic) point to iron deficiency or thalassemia trait, large cells (macrocytic) to B12 or folate deficiency, and sickle-shaped cells to sickle cell disease. Over 50% of Indian women aged 15–49 are anaemic (NFHS-5, 2019–21). Tiredness is easily put down to a hard day's work, so anaemia in people on their feet all day can go unchecked. ## White Cells and Platelets The pathologist looks for immature white cells. Blast cells can indicate leukaemia and need haematology review; the smear raises the suspicion but does not diagnose. For platelets, an analyser may read clumps as a dangerously low count. The slide shows whether the fall is real, which matters when dengue is being considered. ## Hemoparasites Dengue, malaria and chikungunya are endemic across Delhi NCR. The Hemoparasites finding states whether malarial parasites are visible in the blood. A smear does not diagnose dengue or chikungunya. One negative slide also does not rule out malaria when parasites are scarce, so a fever that persists needs a doctor's review and sometimes a repeat sample. ## Shift Work and the Sample Nothing on the slide needs a fast, so the draw can be timed before a shift, after it, or on a rest day. If you have just finished heavy physical work, white cell counts on the companion CBC may be transiently raised, so it helps to tell your doctor and to repeat a borderline result at rest. The cells on the smear are described in the same way regardless. ## Using the Report The report gives a plain line for each of the four cell headings and then the Impression. Show the Impression and your CBC to the doctor together. A smear describes one sample on one day: a normal result makes many blood diseases unlikely but cannot exclude conditions that need their own tests, and an abnormal one is a prompt for further testing rather than a diagnosis by itself. Keep the digital copy for any later visit. ## What Is Not Included This profile does not report numerical counts, Haemoglobin or ESR, which are in the Complete Blood Count (CBC) + ESR. It does not include Iron Studies, ferritin, Vitamin B12 or folate levels, Hb electrophoresis or HPLC, flow cytometry, a bone marrow examination, or dengue, malaria antigen or typhoid tests. A doctor may order any of these after reading the Impression. Each is a separate order. ## About the Laboratory Samples are processed at a NABL-accredited laboratory in our network. NABL accreditation is granted to individual laboratories after evaluation of their equipment, processes and personnel; it is not a company-wide certification, and HealthVas does not claim to hold it. ## Sources NFHS-5, 2019–21 Content last reviewed: October 2026

Who Should Book a Peripheral Smear in Faridabad?

  • Shift workers told their CBC needs a closer look – If a flagged blood count has sent you for a smear, the test should not cost you a shift. It needs no fasting and no particular hour, and the sample can be taken at home before work, after it, or on a rest day. The smear is read with the CBC, so keep that report available.
  • People in physically demanding jobs with lasting tiredness – Fatigue is expected after hard work, which is how a genuine anaemia hides. The red cell findings show whether cells look small, large or irregular. Over 50% of Indian women aged 15–49 are anaemic (NFHS-5, 2019–21), and men are affected too. The smear narrows the cause but does not confirm it; Iron Studies or vitamin levels do.
  • Anyone with fever that keeps returning – Dengue, malaria and chikungunya are endemic across Delhi NCR. The Hemoparasites finding reports whether malarial parasites are visible. It does not diagnose dengue or chikungunya, and a negative slide does not exclude malaria when parasites are scarce, so a repeat sample or a dedicated test may be advised if fever continues.
  • Older residents of established sectors and Old Faridabad – An unexplained low haemoglobin, a raised or reduced white cell count or a falling platelet count in an older relative is a common reason for a smear. A home visit avoids the travel, and no fasting means no early start. Mention blood-thinning medicines to the phlebotomist, and share the Impression with the family doctor.
  • Anyone whose platelet count looks alarmingly low – Clumped platelets can be misread by analysers as a very low count. A pathologist can check the slide, record the Platelets finding, and tell a true fall from an artefact, avoiding needless alarm. If the count really is low, the Impression says so and your doctor can arrange follow-up.
  • People with a family history of sickle cell or thalassemia – Sickle-shaped cells suggest sickle cell disease and small pale cells can accompany thalassemia trait. The smear can raise the possibility, but Hb electrophoresis or HPLC is needed to confirm. It reports cell appearance, not genetics, and is most informative alongside the CBC indices.

How to Prepare

Fasting: Not required. Eat and drink normally; there is no need to rearrange a shift. Sample: One venous blood draw. The slide is prepared and read at the laboratory. Timing: Before a shift, after an hour's rest, or on a rest day all work. Tell your doctor if you had just done heavy physical work. Bring the CBC: The smear is read alongside a blood count. Keep a recent CBC available or add the Complete Blood Count (CBC) + ESR to the same draw. Medications and supplements: Mention recently started iron, B12 or folate, steroids or chemotherapy. Fever: Note when it began and any recent travel for your doctor. Home collection: Available across Faridabad, including NIT 1, NIT 3, Sector 8, 10, 12, 15, 16A, 21D, 28, 37, 46, Old Faridabad, Ballabgarh, Neharpar and Surajkund. Any charge is shown in the booking flow. Reports: Digital within 24 hours, with the pathologist's written Impression.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about Blood Picture - Peripheral Smear Examination in Faridabad

What is included in the Blood Picture - Peripheral Smear Examination?

Five reported findings from one blood sample: Red Blood Cells, White Blood Cells, Platelets, Hemoparasites and a written Impression by the pathologist, who prepares and reads the slide cell by cell. No fasting is required and digital reports arrive within 24 hours.

Is a peripheral smear the same as a CBC?

No. A smear describes cell appearance and is normally read alongside a CBC, which supplies counts and Haemoglobin. The companion profile is the Complete Blood Count (CBC) + ESR. Both are included in every full body package, starting with the Basic Full Body Checkup (77 parameters).

Do I need to fast before a peripheral smear in Faridabad?

No. The Blood Picture - Peripheral Smear Examination needs no fasting, so the sample can be taken at any hour and fitted around a shift. Full body packages differ because they include a Lipid Profile and fasting glucose that need an overnight fast.

What is the price of a peripheral smear test in Faridabad?

The Blood Picture - Peripheral Smear Examination starts from 390. Any home collection charge is shown in the booking flow before you confirm. If you also need a CBC and other profiles, a full body package starting with the Basic Full Body Checkup (77 parameters) costs less than booking them separately.

Is home sample collection available across Faridabad?

Yes. Home collection covers Faridabad, including NIT 1, NIT 3, Sector 8, 10, 12, 15, 16A, 21D, 28, 37, 46, Old Faridabad, Ballabgarh, Neharpar and Surajkund. Any collection charge is shown in the booking flow.

Will physical work or an early shift affect the smear?

The cells are described as they appear, whatever you were doing. Heavy effort can briefly raise white cell counts on the companion CBC, so tell your doctor about recent hard work and repeat a borderline result at rest. No fasting is needed, so a sample before a shift is fine.

Can I give the sample before an early shift?

Yes. No fasting or preparation is needed, so a morning slot before work is fine, as is an evening or rest-day slot. Choose any slot offered at booking. Any collection charge is shown in the booking flow.

Do you collect in Ballabgarh and Old Faridabad?

Yes. Home collection covers Ballabgarh, Old Faridabad, Neharpar and Greater Faridabad as well as the NIT and numbered sectors. Give a landmark and a working phone number at booking so the phlebotomist can find narrow lanes and older residential blocks.

What does the Hemoparasites finding mean?

It states whether parasites such as the malarial parasite were seen on the slide. A positive finding needs prompt medical care. A negative finding on one slide does not fully exclude malaria when parasites are few, so repeat sampling may be advised. The smear does not test for dengue.

Can a smear explain why my haemoglobin is low?

It can suggest the type. Small pale cells point to iron deficiency or thalassemia trait, large cells to B12 or folate deficiency, sickle shapes to sickle cell disease. It does not confirm the cause, which needs Iron Studies, vitamin levels or Hb electrophoresis or HPLC.

Why is a smear read by a person and not a machine?

Analysers count cells but cannot reliably judge shape, size or internal structure. A qualified pathologist prepares the slide and reads it by hand, cell by cell, which is specialist time that cannot be automated.

Does a smear diagnose leukaemia?

No. It can show blast cells, immature white cells that may indicate leukaemia, and prompts specialist referral. Diagnosis needs a haematologist and tests such as flow cytometry or bone marrow examination, which are not part of this profile.

Which packages include the Peripheral Smear?

Every full body package includes the Blood Picture - Peripheral Smear Examination with the Complete Blood Count (CBC) + ESR, starting with the Basic Full Body Checkup (77 parameters). A package costs less than booking the profiles separately.

How long does the report take?

Digital reports arrive within 24 hours of the sample reaching the laboratory, with findings for Red Blood Cells, White Blood Cells, Platelets and Hemoparasites and the pathologist's written Impression.

Is the laboratory NABL-accredited?

Yes, samples are processed at a NABL-accredited laboratory in our network. NABL accreditation is granted to individual laboratories after evaluation of their equipment, processes and personnel; it is not a company-wide certification, and HealthVas does not claim to hold it.
