Amylase is an enzyme made mainly by the pancreas and the salivary glands. The serum amylase test measures it in your blood and is most often used to help diagnose and monitor pancreatitis, an inflammation of the pancreas, in someone with severe upper abdominal pain. One blood sample, no fasting, report within 12 hours, processed at a NABL-accredited laboratory in our network. From 500. Home collection is available across Delhi, including Saket, Greater Kailash, Hauz Khas, Dwarka, Rohini, Pitampura, Karol Bagh, Mayur Vihar and Janakpuri, so an older family member can be tested without travelling. Any collection charge is shown before you confirm.

What the Amylase Test Tells You

At a Glance

Test: Amylase - Serum. Result: A number with a reference range. Price: From 500. Fasting: Not required. Sample: Blood (serum). Reports: Within 12 hours, digital. Home collection: Available across Delhi; any charge is shown at booking. Lab: NABL-accredited. ## What It Measures Amylase is an enzyme that helps digest starch. Most of it comes from the pancreas and the salivary glands. When the pancreas is inflamed or blocked, more amylase leaks into the blood. The test measures how much. ## Why Doctors Order It It is used to help diagnose and monitor acute pancreatitis, and sometimes chronic pancreatitis or other pancreatic problems. It is typically ordered for severe upper abdominal pain that may spread to the back, often with nausea or vomiting. Doctors often pair it with serum lipase, which is more specific to the pancreas. ## Reading the Result A raised amylase can point to pancreatitis, but it can also rise with mumps and other salivary gland problems, some intestinal conditions, kidney disease and certain medicines. A normal level does not always rule pancreatitis out, especially if some days have passed. The result is read with symptoms, examination and imaging. ## When Pain Should Not Wait Severe upper abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fever or a rigid abdomen needs urgent medical attention. Go to hospital instead of waiting for a sample or a report. ## Older Relatives and Gallstones Gallstones are a common cause of pancreatitis and are more frequent in middle age and later. If an older parent has repeated upper abdominal pain, especially after fatty meals, their doctor may order amylase and lipase along with an ultrasound. A home sample avoids a trip across Delhi for someone who is unwell. Festival and wedding-season meals are often heavy and rich, so symptoms sometimes appear after them. ## What Is Not Included This is one test. It does not include lipase, liver function tests, imaging or a blood sugar test. Content last reviewed: October 2026

Who Should Get an Amylase Test?

  • People advised to test by a doctor for upper abdominal pain – Amylase helps assess the pancreas, often alongside lipase.
  • Older family members with recurrent pain after meals – Gallstones are a common cause. Your doctor may order amylase, lipase and an ultrasound. A home sample avoids a trip across the city.
  • People with known pancreatitis being monitored – Repeat testing shows how the condition is responding.
  • People with gallstones or regular heavy alcohol use – These are common causes of pancreatitis. Your doctor may test if symptoms appear.
  • People with mumps or swollen salivary glands – Amylase can rise in salivary gland inflammation as well.
  • Anyone whose doctor has asked for a pancreatic check – A digital report can be shared with the doctor at once.
