Its level in the blood can rise in ovarian cancer. The test is mainly used to monitor treatment, to detect recurrence, and to help evaluate a pelvic mass found on a scan or examination. ## What It Cannot Do CA 125 is not a reliable screening test for ovarian cancer in healthy women. A normal level does not rule cancer out, and a raised level does not prove it. Levels can also rise in many non-cancer conditions, including endometriosis, fibroids, pelvic infection, menstruation, pregnancy and liver disease. The result is always read together with symptoms, examination and imaging. ## Reading a Raised Result A raised result is a reason to talk to your gynaecologist, not a diagnosis. Your doctor may order an ultrasound or other tests, and sometimes a second marker such as HE4.
